The Limehouse is located one and a half miles from the fishing port of Killybegs. Set on a private wooded site with natural waterfalls, it provides the ideal haven for anyone desiring a relaxing break in a unique setting.
With extensive grounds, the Limehouse affords privacy in a beautiful unspoilt area and is less than a ten minute walk from Fintra beach which has blue flag status. Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring the beautiful county of Donegal. - Near the coast and less than half an hour’s drive from the highest marine sea cliffs in Europe, the majestic Slieve League, - with Glencolmcille to the west and Donegal to the east, it is centrally located for touring and sight seeing by land or sea.
The Limehouse gets its name from the old lime kiln beside the house. A set of stone steps lead up to the orchard with its plum and apple trees. Wander up the path through the orchard and enjoy views of the water rushing through the sluice gates, - a reminder of times past when a mill was to be constructed for the Fintra estate. The three way split of the river at the gates gives access to a little island mid-stream that is covered in a lush carpet of bluebells in May and June.
The house itself is perched on the bend of the river and is surrounded by a timber deck overhanging the river on two sides, affording beautiful views of the waterfalls. Traditional in style, the one and a half storey cottage boasts many unusual features. The entrance hall and kitchen have flag flooring, and timber is used throughout the remainder of the house.
The cosy kitchen with its black antique Stanley 8 range, Belfast sink, and rocking chair also has the advantage of modern conveniences, -including dishwasher, gas hob, electric oven, microwave, fridge-freezer, etc. The little timber breakfast room, leading off the kitchen, has access to the deck with its outdoor furniture making it an ideal setting for dining ‘al fresco’.
Killybegs offers a lively nightlife, with three hotels and numerous bars, each with their own distinctive atmosphere. Traditional music, lively street festivals, international boat shows and an annual seafood week, attract tourists time and time again. Killybegs offers a plenitude of opportunities for angling, diving, boating andsight-seeing amidst some of the most spectacular cliff and coastal scenery in western Europe.
Fintra beach, of the European blue-flag standard, with its crystal clear waters and golden sands are amongst the most inviting in Western Europe. With a timber walkway across the dunes, this area is ideal for walking and enjoying the truly breathtaking views of the Atlantic not to be missed at sunset.
Decorative sheds lie adjacent to the house to provide alternative focal points or quietplaces to relax. Ideal spots for having a barbeque or enjoying a glass of wine. The little wooden reading house perched above the rockery, is the ideal place to enjoy a good book or simply relax in its shade and listen to the sound of the river. The rockery contains a blend of plant species from Donegal, such as the wild grasses from the dunes at Fintra beach or heather from the nearby mountains. The gooseberry and blackcurrant bushes annually bear fruit. The deck area at the back of the house enjoys the morning sun and is a unique place to dine al fresco. Overhanging the river, it provides stunning views of the cascading waterfalls. The peaceful flow of the river is the ideal accompaniment to an evening of rest and relaxation. The upper area of the property holds the ruins of an incomplete mill where the sluice gates bear testimony to the rich heritage of the vast Fintra Estate of which the grounds were once part.
The living room with its traditional open fire, grate and hob, sound system, satellite T.V., video and DVD player is a comfortable room in which to relax. French doors opening onto the conservatory which in turn gives access to the timber deck gives the room a unique character. The special location affords views of natural waterfalls from several rooms of the house including the bedrooms, the living room, conservatory and breakfast room.
The master bedroom on the first floor has both King-size and Single beds. With French windows opening onto a small balcony, it has beautiful views of the waterfalls. Also on the first floor is a toilet with bath and electric shower. Bed linen and towels are supplied. When open, the French windows in the master bedroom afford a great view of the falls and the passing water offers a soothing lullaby.
The second bedroom contains a double bed and a cot is available on request. It’s dual aspects provide views of the footbridge, orchard, rockery and reading house. The room is an example of how the house has been decorated throughout - with an attention to detail that enhances the character of this unique property.
