The Haw Lodge

Free Wi-Fi

The Haw Lodge is situated on the N15 which is the main route from Lifford to Sligo, passing through Donegal town. It is close to the border with Northern Ireland and a great base for touring Donegal’s beautiful beaches, Glenveagh National Park, The Giant’s Causeway and the Antrim coast. This house is very special to me and my family as it was my grandparents home. It is a four-bedroom house with a spacious living room and a well-equipped kitchen.

The Lifford Area

The Haw is nestled in rolling countryside just 2km from Lifford, the administrative capital of Co Donegal. The holiday home is within easy driving distance from some of the main towns and villages in east Donegal including Raphoe (6km), Convoy (10km), St Johnston (12km) and Ballybofey and Stranorlar (18km). It is also just 3km from Strabane in Co Tyrone and 26km from both Letterkenny and the Historic Walled City of Derry.

Local Attractions and Amenities

  • Visit the Old Courthouse in Lifford.  Built in 1746 it has been described as one of the oldest and finest courthouses in Ireland. You will have a chance to witness re-enactments of famous trials held in this building including the Napper Tandy Trial and the Lord Leitrim Murder Trial.
  • Go Fishing on the River Finn and the Mourne – permits are required
  • Visit Oakfield Park gardens near Raphoe. Oakfield Park is a privately owned house set in 100 acres of magnificent parkland, woodlands and gardens in the heart of County Donegal. The gardens are open to the public between May and August. There is also a miniature private railway that winds its way over 4km of track within the estate.
  • Play a game of golf at Strabane Golf Club (4km). This course is an exquisite 18 hole parkland course set in the foothills of the Sperrin Mountains. Designed by Eddie Hackett, the course is a par 69 measuring 5,543 metres off the Medal tees. Other fine courses in the region are  Ballybofey & Stranorlar Golf Club (18km) and City of Derry (22km)
  • Visit the President Wilson Ancestral Home near Strabane. Guided tours take place during the months of July and August and give an insight into the history behind the rich Ulster American connections and how the fate of the 28th presidency of the United States was to lie in the hands of local man James Wilson.Visitors can also sample the ambience of bygone days in front of the traditional hearth fire and in the carefully conserved rooms. Artefacts on display include a wide selection of household furnishings, kitchen utensils and farm implements

Great Day Trips

  • Take a trip around the famous Inishowen 100. This is one of Ireland's most scenic drives. The route includes dramatic coastal scenery plus a fine collection of ancient forts and monuments, traditional craft centres, and a dozen or so friendly villages. Scenic highlights include the Gap of Mamore, and Malin Head -  Ireland's most northerly point
  • Visit the magnificent Glenveagh National Park in the Donegal Highlands. This is the jewel in the crown of Donegal tourism. It is situated on the eastern side of the Derryveagh Mountains and contains 14,000 hectares of mountain, raised bogland, lakes and woodlands. Glenveagh Castle is on the shores of Lough Veagh within the park. It is a 19th century, castellated mansion built between 1867 and 1873 and is surrounded by the famous Glenveagh Gardens.
  • Visit Derry City on the banks of the Foyle. Few places in these islands can offer such a compelling and unique experience for the visitor as the Walled City of Derry - its setting on the steep hills overlooking the wide sweep of the River Foyle, its distinctive architecture and its famous walls all provide enormous appeal. The Tower Museum is well worth a visit
  • Visit the superb Ulster American Folk Park near Omagh (26km). This open-air museum explores the historical link between Ulster and America, focusing particularly on the lifestyle and experiences of those immigrants who sailed from Ulster to America in the 18th and 19th centuries. Contained within the park are around thirty buildings — some recreations, some painstakingly-restored originals
  • Visit the Gortin Glen Forest Park located between Newtownstewart and Omagh. The park is situated at the western gateway to the Sperrin Mountains and  contains 1,534 hectares of mostly wooded landscape.
  • Explore the northern coast of Northern Ireland. The Giants Causeway, Bushmills Distillery, the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge and Dunluce Castle are just some of the top attractions in this area.
  • Visit Grey's Printers in Strabane and the Sperrin Mountains

The Haw Lodge offers quality self catering accommodation in a wonderfully tranquil environment. It is a superb base to explore the hidden treasures of East Donegal, North Tyrone and Derry City.

What they say

Can I also take this opportunity to say how helpful and user friendly your website is - it is certainly a plus for Donegal. I became aware of it through a friend who has booked a house in Ballyliffin for a number of us attending a wedding in the area in the summer.
