Eamonn's Cottage is situated on a large property two and a half kilometres to the north of Annagry, set in a quiet and peaceful location. There are sea views from the side and rear gardens. It is south-facing, on an elevation overlooking a pleasant rural landscape and looking westwards to Donegal Airport on the Carrickfinn Peninsula. The holiday home itself is a lovely, neat, dwelling with three bedrooms to sleep up to six. It has a living room, a bathroom, a fully fitted kitchen, and a sun porch. The cottage is well-insulated and has oil-fired central heating in addition to a solid-fuel stove.
The area is known as "The Rosses": - It is a predominantly Irish-speaking area of West Donegal, with geography presenting a rocky, almost barren landscape, studded with a myriad of lakes, coastal sea inlets and numerous offshore islands.
The name comes from the Irish word "Ros"; for headland. The area includes the towns of Annagry, Kincasslagh, Ranafast, Dungloe, Doochary and Lettermacaward; - as well as the inhabited islands of Arranmore, Inisfree, Iniscaoragh, Owey and Cruit.
Donegal Airport is just two miles to the west and is very convenient if you are coming from either Dublin, with a twice-daily flight: - or Glasgow Prestwick, which has 4 flights a week. There is also car hire, a cafe-bar, newsagents, and friendly service at the airport.
The area seems to develop people with a talent for music, especially traditional Irish music; - and famous names like Enya, Clannad, and Daniel O'Donnell have their origins here.
With the type of coastline and the abundance of lakes; it goes without saying, that fishing is one of the most popular activities in the area. Freshwater anglers will find that the lakes are well provided with salmon and trout. If you fancy the open seas, then boats can be hired or rented for deep-sea angling. Fishing permits, boats, detailed angling maps and guides can all be arranged.
Several angling events and festivals are held throughout the year, mainly in the summer months between June and October, with the most notable event being the annual Rosses Anglers "Mary From Dungloe Festival". Not about fishing, but a music festival that started in 1968, focusing on a contest to find a young woman who will be crowned "Mary From Dungloe". It is held in late July and the event attracts thousands of visitors to the area, so early booking is essential.
With a twenty-minute drive inland to the east, one can visit the Dunlewy visitor centre; set in a most beautiful location on a lough at the foot of the majestic Mt Errigal; - Donegal's highest peak. Apart from the visual beauty of the area; visitors will find a restaurant and tea room, a craft shop, an adventure play area, lakeside walks, boat cruising on the lough, traditional music, audio-visual shows and tweed weaving displays.
