Inch Island itself is a small island lying just off the Donegal coast at Burt at the start of the Inishowen peninsula . It is connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway. It is a quiet place with beautiful and diverse scenery - from the fertile lands on the eastern side to the rugged hills and sheltered coves on the western side.
It has a small working fishing harbour, a Napoleonic era fort built into the cliffs and the ruins of an old castle which is located close to the holiday home. The castle was once the property of the O'Doherty Clan of Inishowen. The castle is built on a cliff edge overlooking the Swilly and dates from about the mid 15th century and although it is mostly ruins there are parts of it still in good repair.
Inch Island is also a birdwatcher's paradise. It has a designated wildfowl sanctuary and has large manmade lake filled with swans, geese and many other species of bird. Three species, Whooper Swan, Greenland White-fronted Goose and Greylag Goose, occur in numbers of international importance. This is the area where the swans make their Irish landfall in autumn on their return from breeding grounds in Iceland and there are some excellent vantage points from which to view these majestic birds.
The holiday home is an ideal base for a relaxing getaway and yet it just a 15 minute drive from the centre of the historic walled city of Derry. It is just 5 minutes drive from the quaint village of Fahan which has a large marina and a fine sandy beach. A further 5 minutes is the large coastal town of Buncrana – the main town on the beautiful Inishowen peninsula.
