Alder cottage is located in the hills of Donegal, 3.5km from the village of Churchill and due to its location enjoys peace and privacy amid wonderful rugged countryside. The cottage has been lovingly restored to capture the charm of living in bygone days and features, a turf burning stove, two ensuite bedrooms, a wood decked area and a vaulted main living area.
The owners have paid admirable attention to detail and the homely atmosphere of a traditional Irish cottage is very much in evidence. This is truly a special place amid the hills of Donegal where tradition has been carefully balanced with modern living convenience

Colmcille Heritage Centre
Located at Gartan, Churchill, Letterkenny, this centre houses a unique interpretative exhibition featuring the life and times of Saint Colmcille (Columba) - Patriarch of the Irish monastic system and founder of the Scottish Church. The exhibition is housed in a beautiful stone building on the shores of Lough Gartan, within the Derryveagh mountain range.
The Glebe House and Gallery
Located at Churchill, Letterkenny, the Glebe House is a Regency house set in woodland gardens beside Lake Gartan. The Glebe is decorated with William Morris wallpapers and textiles and has Islamic and Japanese art. The Derek Hill permanent collection includes 300 works by leading 20th century artists, including Picasso and Kokosha, as well as Irish and Italian artists.
Glenveagh National Park
Here within a late 19th century setting in a rugged and remote mountain valley, Henry McIlhenny from Philadelphia created one of the most celebrated gardens in Ireland. Woodland gardens and pleasure grounds, an Italian terrace with antique sculpture and terracotta pots, are all skilfully interwoven against the wild and beautiful Donegal landscape
Kitchen
The kitchen area of Alder Cottage has a large Belfast sink and unobtrusive modern appliances. The doorway to the rear leads directly to one of the two ensuite bedrooms. Step outside through the bright red front door and you have wonderful views across the rugged Donegal landscape.

Living Area
The main living area of Alder Cottage has a high vaulted wooden ceiling and features a wood/turf burning stove as a centrepiece. The cottage has been lovingly restored with great attention to detail and the homely atmosphere of a traditional Irish cottage is very much in evidence. This is truly a special place amid the hills of Donegal where tradition has been carefully balanced with modern living convenience.
One of the two ensuite bedrooms of Alder Cottage with its tasteful furnishings and relaxed mood lighting. These two bedrooms are located on either side of the main living area - the traditional layout for Irish cottages for hundreds of years. The double bed in each bedroom can be made into 2 singles for further flexibility.

The second ensuite double bedroom of Alder Cottage has doors which lead directly out to a wood decked patio area to the front of the cottage - a nod to modernity which does much to enhance the whole experience of staying at this special holiday home in the hills of Donegal.

I travel a lot so I'm always looking for interesting places to stay - anything to avoid another carbon copy hotel - and this has got to be one of the best local travel sites I've seen. Plenty of detail, tons of photos, excellent location info and clear pricing - everything I need to make an informed call.
